Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

  • What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

ACT, which stands for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, combines mindfulness with self-acceptance, values clarification, and taking action to help individuals deal with their problems. The acceptance aspect of the therapy aims to assist patients in acknowledging their problems and accepting the emotions they have in response to them, rather than feeling ashamed or guilty about these emotions. The commitment component of the therapy focuses on identifying actions that can be taken in response to this acceptance and understanding. The underlying principle of ACT is to teach patients to embrace what they cannot control and commit to positive solutions that lead to a fulfilling and contented life. Simply put, ACT aims to teach individuals to accept what they cannot change and focus on positive actions to achieve a fulfilling life.

  • How Does ACT Work?

If you're using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), it's important to face your problems head-on instead of avoiding them. Your therapist will help you get started with self-reflection and values clarification. During therapy, your therapist will listen to your self-talk about traumatic events, problematic relationships, physical limitations, or other issues you might be facing. Together, you'll determine whether an issue requires immediate action or can be accepted for what it is, and you'll make behavioral changes that can improve the situation. The therapy involves a six-step "core process" that includes acceptance, cognitive diffusion, being present, self-as-context, values, and committed action. By going through these steps, you'll learn to allow unpleasant experiences to exist, decrease your focus on negative experiences, experience the present moment, understand yourself beyond your experiences, consider what's important to you, and commit to actions that promote a long-term mindset.

  • Who Can Benefit From ACT?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a versatile form of therapy that can help patients cope with various conditions and life changes. Studies have shown its effectiveness in treating workplace stress, test anxiety, social anxiety disorder, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and psychosis. Additionally, ACT has been utilized in the treatment of medical conditions like chronic pain, substance abuse, and diabetes.

ACT is not just helpful for managing psychological disorders; it can also be a powerful tool for promoting self-determination and positive life changes. When combined with mindfulness practice, ACT can yield lasting cognitive benefits. If you're looking for a therapeutic approach that can help you overcome life's challenges and achieve greater self-awareness, ACT may be the right choice for you.

  • What Causes Adjustment Disorders?

Understanding the Philosophy behind Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a unique form of psychological intervention developed by Steven C. Hayes, a psychology professor at the University of Nevada, in 1986. It is a therapy that promotes psychological flexibility by combining mindfulness and acceptance techniques with commitment and behavior change processes. The goal is to help individuals accept and embrace their thoughts and emotions instead of trying to control or suppress them.

According to Hayes, suffering is a natural part of the human experience, and our instinctual drive to control our experiences can often make things worse. ACT aims to help people develop a new way of relating to their thoughts and feelings, where they can observe and accept them without judgment, and then commit to taking positive action towards their goals and values.

If you're interested in learning more about the philosophy behind ACT, TED talks has hosted Hayes to share his insights and in-depth knowledge. ACT can be an effective therapy for anyone looking to improve their mental health and develop greater psychological flexibility.
